How Sea of Thieves bans work

Sea of Thieves is developed by Rare and published by Xbox Game Studios. Since April 2025, Rare has enforced its rules through a points system, under which cheating leads to a permanent ban at once and other offences to suspensions that add up.

It shall be noted that a penalty can sit either in the game or on the Microsoft account. In the first case, Rare's Player Support reviews it; in the second, the player requests a case review on the Xbox Enforcement page, from which device bans are excluded.

How to appeal a Sea of Thieves ban

  1. Save the ban notice

The first step is to secure the Sea of Thieves ban message as a screenshot and as text, together with the date, the platform and any reference number or ID it shows.

  2. Find the rule it relies on

The notice usually names a rule. That rule shall be looked up in the terms Rare Ltd. publishes, so that the appeal answers it instead of making a general complaint. Rare Ltd. terms of service

  3. Collect what supports your side

Useful evidence includes purchase receipts, earlier support replies with ticket numbers and, for a device ban, when the PC or console was acquired and who else used it. A password, however, is never part of the evidence.

  4. Send one clear appeal to Rare's Player Support (game penalties) or the Xbox case review (Microsoft account)

The appeal is sent while signed in with the banned account, as a single request that sets out what happened in chronological order, why the rule does not fit and which documents are attached. Official page: support.seaofthieves.com (link checked on 26 Oct 2026)

  5. Keep the ticket and follow up with facts

The ticket number and the reply shall be kept. If Rare Ltd. refuses, a second request makes sense only with new facts or a clearer explanation; repeating the first request adds nothing.

We prepare steps 2 to 4 for you: the appeal text, the rule it answers and where to send it, checked by a person before you get it. Start your Sea of Thieves appeal

Questions

Questions about Sea of Thieves appeals

Can a Sea of Thieves ban be appealed?

Yes. Rare's Player Support reviews game penalties, and for enforcement on the Microsoft account Xbox offers a case review on its Enforcement page; device bans are not eligible.

I play on Steam. Does that change anything?

The game still links to the Microsoft account used to sign in, so enforcement on that account is reviewed by Xbox.
